Disclaimer: I know Mel Comley whom I have met online, but she did not ask me to write this review (or even hint).

I was curious about _Impeding Justice_ for quite some time before I finally purchased a copy. I rarely read police procedurals or thrillers and I am picky when I do. I'm happy to report that this book lives up to its hype. Inspector Lorne Simpkins doesn't sleep, doesn't rest, and doesn't slow down as the deadly case proceeds. She's billed as the female Jack Bauer, and this isn't an inappropriate name. Her enemy, the Unicorn, inflicts psychological and physical torture and deals out death shockingly. He is probably the most heartlessly brutal sociopath since Shakespeare's Iago. Unspeakable horrors occur in this book: turn-your-head-away, _Hostel_ level scenes of torture and depravity. As a result, I rooted for Lorne every moment, and I cared deeply about the innocent victims, especially Charlie and Sasha.

There have been some complaints about her being a strong female protagonist. Uh... Why? The book is a page-turner and Lorne Simpkins anchors it just fine!

My only suggestion is that you plan to buy this book along with its sequel, Final Justice, as there are a lot of plot elements left unresolved for the second book.

The book taught me some British slang, too. I've been wanting to learn more British slang for yonks! :-)
